Through-hole and Surface Mount Technology (SMT) are two methods of assembling printed circuit boards. While through-hole components are inserted into drilled holes, SMT components are mounted directly onto the PCB surface, allowing faster production, greater component density and improved manufacturing efficiency.

Understanding the Two Assembly Methods

Surface Mount Technology (SMT) and through-hole assembly are both widely used within the electronics industry, but they differ significantly in how components are attached to a printed circuit board (PCB).

Through-hole assembly requires component leads to pass through drilled holes before being soldered to the opposite side of the PCB. In contrast, SMT assembly places surface mount components directly onto solder paste printed on the PCB surface before completing the reflow soldering process.

Today, SMT has become the preferred manufacturing method for most electronic products due to its speed, precision and ability to support highly automated production.

Advantages of Surface Mount Technology

SMT assembly offers several advantages over traditional through-hole manufacturing. Components are generally smaller, allowing more to be fitted onto each PCB while reducing overall product size. Automated placement equipment also enables faster production, greater consistency and lower manufacturing costs for medium and high-volume assemblies.

These benefits make SMT ideal for modern electronics used in sectors including medical devices, industrial controls, telecommunications and consumer products.

When Through-Hole Is Still Used

Although SMT is the most common assembly method, through-hole technology still has an important role. Larger connectors, transformers, switches and components subjected to repeated mechanical stress often benefit from the additional strength provided by through-hole mounting.

Many PCB assemblies combine both technologies, using SMT for most components while incorporating through-hole parts where greater mechanical durability is required.
